Mushroom Lamps Australia: Choosing Shape, Size and Soft Light
Share
A mushroom lamp can soften a room without changing much else. Its rounded shade and compact silhouette sit comfortably beside a bed, on a console or in a calm corner.
But the shape is only part of the decision. If you’re looking for a mushroom lamp in Australia, consider how it will fit your space, where the light will fall, and whether you enjoy the object as much when it’s switched off.

Start with the light you need
Are you looking for something to read beside, or a mellow light to leave on while you unwind?
A lamp that creates a subtle glow through its shade may be lovely for evening atmosphere, but it won’t necessarily provide enough focused light for reading. For that, look for a design that directs light towards the page.
For living rooms and bedrooms, ambient lighting offers another option when ceiling lights feel too bright. A mushroom lamp can become the light you reach for after dinner, while watching a film or before bed.
Look beyond the usual dome.
Mushroom lamps share a recognisable shape, but their surfaces and proportions can feel quite different.
A smooth dome gives a simple, rounded outline. A ribbed or layered shade introduces texture, with details that change as the lamp is illuminated.
At Namami Studio, our Mycelia mushroom lamp takes inspiration from the gills beneath a mushroom cap. Its flowing ribs bring such structure into the design, creating an organic form with detail to explore up close.
Designed and made in Melbourne using 3D printing and hand finishing, Mycelia is made from PLA, a plant-based bioplastic. It is designed for soft ambient light rather than focused task lighting.

Check the width as well as the height.
A mushroom shade often reaches past its base, so height alone won’t tell you whether it fits.
Before choosing a bedside lamp, measure the usable surface of your table. Leave space for the things you actually keep there: a book, your phone, a glass of water.
Mycelia measures approximately 33 cm high and 29 cm wide. Mark out that footprint on paper to see how much room it will take up before ordering.
On a larger console or sideboard, leave enough space for the lamp's silhouette to be visible. It doesn’t need to compete with a row of equally tall objects.
Choose colour for the daylight hours too.
It’s easy to choose a lamp from a photograph of it glowing. Think about how it will look during the day, too.
A pale finish can sit quietly among timber, linen and neutral furnishings. Green can bring an organic accent, while pink or orange can make the lamp a more playful focal point.
You don’t need to match every colour in the room. Try repeating an existing accent colour, or choose a colour you’d like to introduce in a small way.

Give it a place in your everyday routine.
A bedside lamp should be easy to switch on without reaching awkwardly behind furniture. On a living-room console, check that its cord can reach a socket before deciding where it belongs.
Try the position after dark, too. The room may need light beside the sofa rather than in the corner that looked best during the day.
The most useful lamp is often the one you use most in the evening.
Choosing your mushroom lamp
Start with three questions: does it fit, does it give you the light you need, and do you like its form when it’s switched off?
Once those are right, colour and texture can make it feel personal.
