Cordless Table Lamps: A Guide to Size, Light and Charging
Share
A cordless table lamp lets you place light where a power point is awkward: beside the bed, in the centre of a dining table or on a shelf. The useful question is how you will use it. A small pool of light for dinner calls for something different from a lamp used for reading every evening.
This guide explains what to compare when choosing cordless and rechargeable lamps, with examples from our Melbourne-designed range.
Start with the light you need
For winding down, dining or creating a softer corner, look for warm ambient light and adjustable brightness. Dimming lets you change the mood without moving the lamp. If reading or detailed work is the main purpose, check whether the lamp provides enough light on the page or work surface; a decorative glow alone may not suit the job.
Colour-changing modes can be enjoyable, but check the everyday white-light settings first. Choose the setting you would want to live with most evenings.
Measure the surface, not just the lamp
Check the lamp's height and widest point against your bedside table or shelf. Leave room for a glass, book and phone. On a dining table, consider whether the shade interrupts the view between people sitting opposite each other.
Try marking the footprint with a sheet of paper before buying. For a shelf, check both depth and clearance above the lamp. A sculptural shape can feel generous without needing to fill the whole surface.
Compare battery life at the brightness you will use
Battery life changes with brightness and lighting mode. A headline runtime measured at a low setting does not tell you how long a lamp lasts at maximum brightness. Compare like-for-like settings and look for a useful range rather than one large number.
For example, our Soft Serve Cordless with Remote lists approximately 15 hours at low brightness and around 5–6 hours at maximum brightness. Those are estimates, so plan charging around your normal use rather than treating them as a fixed promise.
Think through the charging routine
Choose a convenient place to charge the lamp and check the connector, charging instructions and what is included. USB-C describes the connection; it does not automatically mean a cable or wall charger is supplied. Check the individual product listing before ordering.
If you want to move the lamp between rooms, consider how often you will need to return it to its charging spot. If you mainly want light in one permanent location with a nearby socket, a corded table lamp may suit your routine just as well.
Choose a form you enjoy with the light off
A lamp is also an object in the room during the day. Pleat Cordless uses fine pleated ribs for texture, while Soft Serve has a flowing, rounded silhouette. Both offer remote-controlled dimming and rechargeable cordless lighting; their different shapes give you two distinct ways to style a surface.

For colour, start with the room's existing accents. A warm orange or pink can become a focal point; a softer neutral lets the form and light do more of the work. If you are curious about the material and texture, read our guide to 3D printed lamps.
Portable does not automatically mean outdoor-rated
A rechargeable lamp can be easy to carry without being designed for rain or damp conditions. Check the individual product's intended use and any stated outdoor rating before choosing it for a balcony, garden or bathroom.
A quick checklist before you choose
- Does the light suit relaxing, dining or the specific task you have in mind?
- Does the footprint fit, with space for the other things on the surface?
- Is the runtime quoted at a brightness you will actually use?
- Are the controls and charging routine convenient?
- Have you checked included accessories and intended use?
