The Art of Digitally Handmade Lamps: Behind the Scenes at Namami Studio

At Namami Studio, each lamp is more than just a lighting fixture — it’s a digitally sculpted work of art, blending new-age precision with timeless craftsmanship. Designed with intention and made in small batches, our lamps are created at the intersection of nature, technology, and human touch.

But what does it mean for a lamp to be digitally handmade? And how do our most celebrated pieces — like the Coral Lamp, Iris Lamp, Harp Lamp, and Pleat Lamp — come to life?

Let’s take you behind the scenes of how we craft light, one digitally handcrafted piece at a time.

Design with Intent: From Organic Forms to Digital Models

Every Namami Studio lamp begins with a design impulse rooted in nature — the flowing geometry of coral, the curve of a petal, or the layered pleats of fabric. These inspirations are translated into digital form using computational design tools, allowing us to experiment with precision and fluidity.

Unlike mass-produced lighting, our forms are never pulled from a mould. They are custom-developed using digital sculpting — intuitive, expressive, and exact.

Where Tech Meets Touch: The Digital-Handmade Process

Our process is a modern craft practice. It fuses the control of digital design with the integrity of hand-finishing:

Parametric Design & 3D Modelling: Every lamp begins as a 3D model, designed using tools like Rhino and Grasshopper, which allow us to play with repetition, rhythm, and complexity.

3D Printing: The digital model is then brought to life using our in-house 3D printing process. We print each piece using biodegradable or recyclable materials such as PLA, which gives our forms a sculptural yet sustainable base.

Hand Finishing: Once printed, every piece is hand-sanded, refined, painted or sealed. It’s here that the warmth of the human hand re-enters the object — ensuring no two are ever quite the same.

Assembly & Lighting: We wire each piece with high-grade components, ensuring durability, dimmable options, and safe international shipping.

This process enables us to combine the efficiency of tech with the emotion of craft — a rare balance in today’s design landscape.

Handmade in Australia, Designed for the World

All Namami lamps are made in our Australian studio, in small batches. We ship worldwide, serving design-forward homes and creative spaces in Melbourne, New York, Delhi, and beyond.

Every lamp is made-to-order, reducing waste and overproduction. It also means your lamp is made just for you — digitally shaped, hand-refined, and globally shipped with care.

Why We Believe in Digital Craft

We live in a world where design is moving fast — but that doesn’t mean it should be shallow. By embracing digital fabrication, we can push the boundaries of form, scale, and intricacy — while maintaining the soul of the handmade.

Our lamps are not just objects. They are living stories of design evolution — from natural inspiration, to digital code, to something you can hold and live with.
